A Denim Motorcycle Jacket

The end of the 1800′s and the beginning of the 1900′s brought many new inventions such as the light bulb, the phonograph, the electric washing machine, electric bicycles, the automobile, and of course the motorcycle. All of these inventions and many more add to and make life what we know it as today.

One invention that preceded all of these was that of denim fabric. Denim is a rugged cotton twill textile or fabric that is woven in a way that gives it the familiar diagonal ribbing design that we all recognize as denim. This fabric has been used in United States since the late 18th century. This original sturdy fabric was called serge and made in Nimes, France and so was often know as serge de Nimes, and was shortened to denim. It was traditionally colored blue with indigo dye to make blue jeans, and as a side note the word jeans came from the French word for Genoa Italy, which is Genes wear the first denim trousers were made. All though the common color of denim is blue it does come in many other colors. Indigo dyeing produces the traditional blue colors and sulfur dyeing is used to create all of the other colors.

So what does this all mean to those that ride a motorcycle? Denim is a rugged fabric that motorcycle jackets are available in. The top of the list for motorcycle gear and the traditional biker look will always be leather, which is very abrasive resistant. No biker should be out riding without protective gear. This leaves the riders skin with nothing between it and the asphalt in the case of being thrown from their bike or having to lay their bike down. The result of that is disaster, terribly painful skin abrasions and a long time of healing. A denim motorcycle jacket covers and protects the rider. There are many ways in which it gives protection. While out riding there are hazards of the road and weather conditions that can come up. A jacket protects a rider from rocks and other debris that may be out on the road, as well as from the wind, and the cold as well as the already mentioned skin abrasion.

Denim jackets are available in different styles. They come in the classic motorcycle jacket style which has a slanted zipper, wide snap down collar that can be unsnapped allowing the jacket to be fully zipped up, and zippered pockets, as well as the denim shirt style of jacket that has metal buttons up the front and flap pockets that are also button closed. Motorcycle riding vests also are available in denim.

Riding is one of the best experiences of life, and every rider deserves to ride with peace of mind they are protected against the hazards that can come up on the open road. Wearing rugged denim is one the choices.
