Store Fuel In Jerry Can Containers
Jerry can containers may be metal or plastic. You can buy them in different widths and sizes. Capacities range from 5 litres to 20 litres. Just remember that the larger they are, the heavier they get to lift to pour. You’ll also need to get either a funnel or a siphon pump. You may want to purchase some durable plastic jerry cans to store your fuel.
Jerry cans may be purchased from boating, camping and fishing stores, hardware, automotive and caravan accessory stores.
Several tough plastic twenty-litre red fuel cans have been designed. Some of them have two longer handles to assist carrying when full and for easier pouring. The neck diameter of the fuel can has also been increased to allow the filler nozzle at service stations to be inserted into it thereby reducing the possibility of overflow or spillage. Jerry cans were designed to fit a standard rack of a 4WD. Be sure to pick up the one with the smooth side as it’s a better fit in a regular jerry can holder. You can purchase some very durable twenty litre plastic jerry cans.
If you’ll be separating different fuels into their own jerry can containers, place coded fuel tags on them. Two-stroke (Yellow), leaded (White), unleaded (Red), and diesel (Brown).
Carrying fuel is always risky.
Never carry fuel in your vehicle or store fuel in any living area and if stowed on a trailer or caravan only in rigid, protected and secured positions.
A jerry can holder made of metal is the ideal way of securing the cans to a camper trailer or caravan. There are fuels that combust on impact, so make sure you don’t place their holders where they may be vulnerable to accidental impact like the rear of the RV.
If carrying fuel in jerry cans is an absolute necessity, don’t carry them part full. One more option to carrying jerry cans is to have your vehicle’s fuel tank upgraded to a long range tank.
Filling jerry cans and your safety
Static electricity can build up between the vehicle driver or passenger and the seat and you will often notice you will get a small electric shock as you touch something metal when exiting the vehicle. This is what is called a static discharge. If the first thing you touch is a fuel nozzle a spark might ignite the surrounding fuel vapours and make a flash fire. Don’t re-enter the vehicle to retrieve your wallet until after you have completed the fill as you could once again pick up static electricity.
Refueling should not be done in confined areas and the vehicle or any operating machinery should be turned off. Keep mobile telephones or anything that might ignite away from jerry cans or fuel dispensing nozzles and don’t smoke either. Fuel vapors can ignite.
Wait until after you have totally emptied the fuel from the jerry can into your tank, and then it’s advised to leave the can open for as long as possible in the sun to let the vapors from the remaining fuel evaporate and let the can dry. Give the empty can time to cool down before replacing the lid and try to keep them away from direct sunlight and heat.
When refilling the jerry can, refill it to the top. As air expands to 3 times more than gasoline does, a part full jerry can is at a higher risk of pressure than a full can. Always exercise caution in opening a jerry can, hold the opening away from you when letting go of the cap as fuel may burst out.
